Description of the included Brain Age game bundle:

Brain Age Check

Players have four modes that they can play - Brain Age Check, Training, Quick Play, and SudokuThe Brain Age Check gives the player three puzzles to completeThe first test is usually a stroop test, although the player can choose to not do it by saying that he or she cannot speak into the microphone at the momentAt the end of the Brain Age Check, Professor Kawashima assesses the age of the player's brain (or a "brain age")The higher the brain age, the worse the player performedThe ideal age for a brain in Brain Age is 20, as Kawashima's theories claim that the brain stops developing at 20The player may then replay the Brain Age Check, but it will not change the brain age for the day.

Once the player clarifies whether he can speak into the microphone or not, Professor Kawashima will describe the first puzzleIf the player answered that he can speak, it will start with a Stroop Test; if the player says otherwise, however, the game will pick a puzzle at random, including Calculations X 20, Word Memory, Connect Maze, and Number CruncherAn extra puzzle is Speed Counting, which is accessible through the hidden Brain Age Select mode.

During the Stroop Test, the game will display one of four words: blue, black, yellow, and redOne word will appear on-screen on random, and it will repeatedly show one of the words until the puzzle endsEach word is one of the four above mentioned colors (eg, the word red may be colored blue), and the player must say the color, rather than the word.

There is another puzzle which requires the player to speak called Speed CountingIn Speed Counting, the player counts up from one to 120 as fast as he can without slurring numbers or using short versions of numbers (such as "one-twenty" instead of "one hundred twenty"), although he is not required to speak into the microphoneOnce the player is finished, he must push "Done".

Word Memory gives the player a list of 30 four letter words, that the player must study as well as he can for two minutesAfter this two minutes is up, the player must write down as many words as he can remember in three minutes, although if he finished beforehand or gives up before three minutes is up, the player can simply push select to end itAnother puzzle called Connect Maze gives players a randomly created group of circles, with letters and numbers in themThere is one circle for every letter in "A" through "M", as well as a circle for every number 1-13The player must then connect a line between a letter and a number, starting with "A"The player must connect the letter "A" to the number one, and then connect it to the letter "B" and then the number two, and so on until the player reaches 13.

Calculations X 20 presents the player with 20 mathematical equations, including addition, subtraction, and multiplicationOn the top screen are the questions, which scroll up as they are answered (either correctly or incorrectly), while the touch screen is used to write out the answerIn

Number Cruncher, the player is presented with many screens containing several numbers, which vary in their appearance and actionsFor instance, a screen may feature five blue numbers, three red numbers, and one moving yellow number, and above it is a question, such as "how many blue numbers are there?", which the player must answer as quickly and accurately as possible.

Training

The Training mode allows the player to play a variety of puzzles, with all but one of the puzzles being exclusive to the Training modeOnce the player completes at least one puzzle, Kawashima awards him or her with a stamp, which he places on the current dateIf the player places at least three puzzles, the stamp will expand in sizeAfter accumulating a certain number of stamps, Kawashima will award him or her with a new puzzle, difficulty mode, or additional feature under the Options menuEach puzzle can be played as many times as the player likes, although only the first play-through of the day will count in the graph for that puzzle.

Puzzles

There are nine puzzles in Training mode:

1Calculations X 20 which is the same as the one found in the Brain Age CheckOne question will appear on the top screen, and the player must hand-write the answer on the touch screenThere are a total of 20 questions, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

2Calculations X 100, which is the same as Calculations X 20, although with 100 questions instead of 20It features a Hard mode, which has the same mechanics but adds division problems.

3, Reading Aloud, which gives the player an excerpt from a classic story such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Little Women, and tasks the player with reading the story aloud to see how quickly he can do itThe player progresses through the excerpt by pushing Next, until he reaches the end of the excerptIf the player pushes Next too quickly, the puzzle will end prematurely.

4Low to High features several boxes on both screens, each in the same pattern as each otherThe game will count down at varying speeds, and when it hits zero, numbers will appear in these boxes for a short period of timeAfterwards, the player must touch the boxes on the touch screen from lowest number to highest by memorizing the numbers on the top screenAfterwards, the game will introduce one puzzle after the other in a similar fashionThe quantity of boxes to memorize increases after each correct answer, and decreases after each incorrect answer, with the minimum quantity of boxes being four.

5Syllable Count, which shows several phrases one after the other on the top screen, and the player must write the number of syllables in each phrase on the touch screen.

6Head Count features a group of people on the top screen (eg4)After a few seconds to allow the player to count the number of people, a house falls over themThe player must watch the screen carefully, as the people inside will leave the house and more people will enter the houseThis will eventually cease, and the game asks the player to write down how many people are currently in the houseThe puzzle gets more difficult as the player progresses in itThere is also a hard mode in which people also come in and out of the chimney.

7Triangle Math has a series of mathematical equations that the player must solveIt is designed similarly to the Calculation puzzles, in that the equation is on the top screen, and the player writes the answer on the touch screenThe equations have three numbers and two mathematical symbols in between them (eg3 + 4 + 8 or 3 - 4 + 8), which is solved by adding or subtracting the first two numbers, and then adding or subtracting the last two numbersThis also features a hard mode where an extra tier is added to the triangle.

8Time Lapse displays two analog clocks (egone at 2:45 and one at 7:30), and requires the player to calculate the difference in time between these clocks.

9Voice Calculation, which is similar to the Calculations puzzlesHowever, this puzzle requires the player to speak the correct answer into the microphone instead of write it on the touch screen, similar to the Stroop Test.

Quick Play

Quick Play can be played by anyone, whether he or she has a saved file or notQuick Play allows the player to play three modes - Quick Brain Age Check, Quick Training, and Quick Sudoku, all only providing the player with one of the easy puzzles in each of these modes to tryQuick Brain Age Check only allows the player to play the stroop testIn Quick Training, the game only allows the player to play Calculations X 20And in Quick Sudoku, the play may only play the easiest Sudoku puzzle availableAt the end of each session, the player's brain age or time will be assessed, and Kawashima will give a preview of the full game.

 

Description of the included Brain Age 2 Game Bundle:

The format of the game is identical to Brain AgeUsing one of four profiles stored on the game, the player can choose one of several activities"Brain Age Check" will run 3 random tests (although by holding the Select button while choosing Brain Age check, the player can choose the tests themselves) to estimate the player's "brain age"; and individual activities can be used for practiceThe brain age will range from 20 to 80, depending on how well the person does in the testStatistics are kept over the course of daily play to allow the player to track their progressAny activity can also be used for Quick PlayAdditionally, the player can solve 100 Sudoku puzzles, as well as play Virus Buster / Germ Buster, a simplified version of DrMario modified for stylus play, between training sessionsThe primary change in the game is in the specific activities, all which are new to this version.

Brain Age Check

Rock, Paper, Scissors is based on the game of the same name, though the player is presented with their virtual opponent's choice and must choose the correct state to either win or lose, as instructed by the testThis test uses verbal input from the player and is not presented if the player instructs the game that they are not in an area they can speak.

Serial Subtraction / Continuous Countdown presents the player with one large number and a second smaller number that they must repeatedly subtract from the larger number; the previous result is blacked out, requiring the player to remember this result, though they can check that number by tapping a button for a performance penaltyKnown as Continuous Countdown in Europe.

Symbol Match / Speedy Symbols shows a simple substitution cipher of a single digit to a symbol ("#", "@", etc.)A series of questions asking which symbol is represented by a number is shown to the player, using this code.

Math Recall / Memory Addition presents a series of single digit addition problems; one number from the equation will be common on the next equation, but will be changed on the subsequent oneAn example series may be "2+3=?", "4+3=?", "4+8=?" "1+8=?" and so forthThe reused digit is blacked out on the second equation, requiring the player to remember that and perform the addition correctlyIf the player cannot remember, they can tap a button to reveal the blacked-out number with a performance penalty.

In Number Memory / Memorize 5x5, the player is presented with a 5x5 grid with the numbers 1 though 25 randomly distributed on the gridWithin two minutes, the player must memorize as many symbols as they can, then fill in a blank grid from memoryEach space on the grid can only be guessed at once, with the correct number being shown after entry.

In Highest Number, the player is shown several number of various font sizes and possibly moving on the screenThe player must tap the highest value number, regardless of how its presented on screen.

Training

The training activities include Math Recall above, in addition to the following activities.

In Sign Finder / Missing Symbols, the player is shown a single math operation lacking the operator (plus, minus, multiplication or division)The player must write the correct operator to satisfy the equationIn hard mode, the player may be asked to fill in multiple operators.

Piano Player / Masterpiece Recital presents the player with one octave of a piano keyboard, and a scoring musical score of common folk tunes (such as "Home on the Range") on the opposite screenThe player must hit the correct notes on the piano as indicated by the scorePoints are earned for following the tempo and rhythm, although the music will pause if the player makes a mistake or does not hit a note when expectedIn hard mode, the piano's keys and the notes are not labeled, and the song accompaniment will continue to play even if the player makes a mistake.

In Word Blend, the player listens to one, two or three words simultaneously spoken through the DS speaker (left and right audio channels), and must write the word(s) that they hearIn hard mode, the words are longer and spoken softer.

Word Scramble shows a rotating ring of letters that can be anagrammed into a wordThe player must guess that word, though they can pass on any word they can't identify.

Change Maker / Correct Change shows a dollar and cents amount to the player, and the bill used to pay for that amountThe player must select the right type of change in bills and coins(In the UK version shows 拢1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 1p COINS)

Calendar Count / Days and Dates will ask questions relating to calendar days, such as days of the week, or the date of a day a number of days from the present.

Memory Sprint / Finishing Position asks the player to keep track of the position of one target runner in a sprint, with the screen showing only a small segment of the players running the sprintThe player must identify the correct finishing position of the target runner.

Math Recall / Memory Addition presents a series of single digit addition problems; one number from the equation will be common on the next equation, but will be changed on the subsequent oneAn example series may be "2+3=?", "4+3=?", "4+8=?" "1+8=?" and so forthThe reused digit is blacked out on the second equation, requiring the player to remember that and perform the addition correctlyIf the player cannot remember, they can tap a button to reveal the blacked-out number with a performance penaltyThere is a hard mode, where you have to recall 2 blacked out numbers, one for the current problem, and one for the next problem.

Clock Spin / Determine the Time shows the player an analog or digital LCD clock face that is rotated or flipped on the screen, and will ask the player to enter the indicated timeThe analog face will only have one number on it as the reference point.

In Block Count / Calculate the Height, blocks of various shapes will fall in a Tetris-style gridOnce they are in the grid, they can no longer be seen, so you have to remember how many have fallen into each columnSometimes, pairs of blocks will fall in horizontally, leaving a gap in the columnThis counts in the final height, so you have to remember this tooWhen the falling is complete, the player will be asked to count the height of a specific column in the gridThere is a hard mode to this where the blocks fall faster.

Stamps and tips

One stamp may be collected per day, after completing at least one training exerciseWhen certain numbers of stamps are collected, new training exercises and features are unlockedOnce eight stamps are collected, a feature to design personal stamps is unlocked.

At the end of a training program, Doctor Kawashima will give the user a brain tip, and once 5 stamps have been collected, it will be possible to read all of the tips Doctor Kawashima has given out
